AFRICAN SPECKLED PIGEON - Columba guinea

Physical Characteristics
The African speckled pigeon gets its name from the white speckles on its wings. This bird is brown to bluish-gray in color with a gray head and underside. There is a ring of red skin visible around each eye. On occasion, the feathers around the neck are slightly ruffled. Full grown, they can get over 13 inches in length from head to tail.

Habitat
This bird can be found in a variety of habitats including grasslands, urban areas, forests, and cliff ledges south of the Sahara in Africa.

Diet
African speckled pigeons feed on a variety of seeds, grains, and fruits.

Reproduction
This bird is commonly seen building stick nest along the sides of cliffs and buildings. On average, they lay two eggs at a time.

The African speckled pigeon is a very urban species of pigeon in Africa. It is also known as the rock pigeon.

The African speckled pigeon is considered non-threatened.
